The National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) on Thursday began a week-long educational programme on civic responsibilities and rights for schools within the Ablekuma South and West Sub-Metro in Accra.
As part of the programme, officials of the Ablekuma South/West Sub-metro office of the NCCE would visit more than 30 schools targeted with resource persons selected within the communities to interact with the school children on the virtues of a good citizen.
Mr Stephen Yao Heymann, NCCE officer in-charge of the sub-metro, who briefed the Ghana News Agency in Accra about the programme, said the first batch of three schools made up of Hijaz Islamic Basic School, Great Nkrumah Memorial School and Hampstead Academy within the Korle-Gonno vicinity had been visited by the team.
The programme forms part of the annual Citizenship Day celebrations introduced into the activities of the NCCE in 2012.
Citizenship Day is set aside to commemorate Ghana’s return to democratic rule in 1992, and also aims at inculcating the spirit of quality citizenship in the pupils, and to remind them of the sweats and toils of the nation’s forefathers.
Mr Abdul Razak Quarshie, National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Coordinator of the Ablekuma South/West Metro Office, educated the pupils about citizenship and advised them to stay away from getting into trouble.
