'Cashgate' trial begins in Malawi
President Joyce Banda ordered investigation of politicians and businessmen over millions of dollars in embezzlement.
A trial looking into the biggest financial scandal in Malawi's history has begun in the capital, Lilongwe.
At least 68 prominent figures stand accused of stealing funds in what has been dubbed "Cashgate" by the media. It is estimated that more than $100m over a 10-year period has been lost.
A senior Malawian civil servant and two executives on Wednesday became the first of dozens of defendants to go to trial.
"The cases have started and I pray that they'll go fast so that Malawians can finally know what happened," Information Minister Brown Mpinganjira told the AFP news agency. "We have been looking for answers and the answers can be found through the court proceedings."
We have been looking for answers and the answers can be found through the court proceedings.
Brown Mpinganjira, Information Minister
President Joyce Banda, who has appointed international investigators to probe the allegations, has said that about 30 percent of the country’s budget could have been looted.
So far authorities have tracked $20m in stolen state funds, Mpinganjira said, amid rumours the figure could exceed $100m.
Government officials allegedly used a central computer payment system to transfer money to non-existent firms for supposed services, then deleted the companies' information from the system.
Foreign aid withheld
Donor countries are withholding millions of dollars in financial aid pending the investigation. Western donors provide about 40 percent of the country's annual income.
"People are awaiting the outcome of this case with great intensity, knowing as they do that in the past cases such as this have simply disappeared," said Al Jazeera's Mike Hanna, reporting from Lilongwe.
"People want to know if this case will go through and whether people will be held responsible."
Allegations of the massive looting of government funds surfaced after the shooting of budget director Paul Mphwiyo in September.
Mphwiyo, who survived the attack, had reportedly planned to reveal a corruption ring.
Banda dissolved the cabinet in October and sacked the powerful ministers of justice and finance.
The president, who took office after the death of her predecessor in 2012, faces presidential, parliamentary and local government elections in May.
More arrests in the Cashgate saga are expected when a probe backed by Britain and the European Union is completed, according to Mpinganjira.

First and foremost, every freaking fuck face has migrated from their village and encroached on Ga lands sold to them by stupid ignorant chiefs. An equal number of people from all over the nation have come to squat on any patch of land that appears vacant, even side walks and alley ways. We are animals, and nothing can change that perception. Our only luck in life is that we walk on two legs, have a brain size bigger than that of chimps and monkeys. It isn't such a bad place to be considering all others. We are perfectly situated between Caucasian intelligence and Ape intelligence. I will simply continue to pretend that I am part of you, while I hate all of you so much with immense passion. You are all part of the problem. I walk the streets of Accra day in and day out, just looking for a sensible human who has my genes and looks like me, but the disappointments are so predictable. This has never been a new problem, why are we even discussing it. A civil war won't change much, only our true animal instincts will be revealed. Another coup will simply set us farther back, or like Rawlings keep us on ICE. I'll keep praying to my God, hoping he will someday listen to me and do as I request - Vanquish every living soul on this god forsaken land called Ghana!!! Please leave me to procreate the new generation of civilized Ghanaians PERIOD!

I have heard similar daft sentiments by white racists in Europe and America being directed at recent arrivals and immigrants to their countries. Such primitive bigotry will not cure the ills of this world.
Why are you wasting your 'frigging' time walking the streets of Accra looking for a sensible human when, if you were a smart person yourself, you would be roaming the streets to figure out what you can do to alleviate (improve) the situation.

I live in a German city with population of 450.000 less than a sixth of that of Accra, yet we have 12 cemetries and each can be used for the 100 years, but in Ghana, no. Accra with a population of over 3 million has 3 cemetries: Awudome, Osu and Mile 7.
Do we need experts from Europe or America to tell us that we need more cemetries?
God was very generous to give us brains free of charge, so let us make good use of it.
Think, plan and do that again Mother Ghana.

My late sister's graveyard has been vandalised twice before it was was destroyed in december 2013. Now we have top engage some of this guys who roam about at the cemetry to get it redone again. Is it not a shame that the final resting place has become the next highest bidder? The military cemetry adjacent is always well kept. Why can't we done the same for all cemetries?
Go to Awodome Kaneshie cemetry and you will find wayside fitters doing their work in front of the cemetry. You will find all sorts of hustlers vandalising graveyards for money. After all this disgracing act we call ourselves god fearing people - What a Joke!

However what annoys me even more fr the mess at the cemetery is for people like Dr Simpson Anim Boateng, to have the courage to come out in public to make sentiment in favour of his utter incompetence. Vanderpuiye obviously has not been to the Osu cemetery for over 10 years.
What goes on, on tombstones in the cemetery and the graves of our dearly departed at the Osu cemetary, defies expression.

Both NDC And NPP GOVERNMENT'S have have failed on this issue of Cemetery. Even a JSS student knew that is of paramount important to to have more cemeteries when population increases bt its so sad that this issue has to be head lined on the news. So this clearly shows how selfish are our leaders cos knew without a doubt that if they die their burial places wont be such an headache for their families. There is a need for us as Ghanaians not to be blind when it comes to putting the national interest at the forefront ,meaning above any other Party if that the case is.

Please close this cemetary. It has served us well and we need to move on. our relatives are now exposed not long after burial. All families must now create burial sites in their villages and send their dead there. over there, they will get 6 feet but here, it is now 4 feet [2 feet underground and 2 feet above ground using blocks]. AMA must not allow this to continue.

Where are the thinking minds at AMA? If the cemetary is at full capacity, simply find another piece of land for burial purposes. We have plenty of land in Ghana. We should not repeat what was done at Mile 7 or 11 near Weija. When I teenager, that whole place was a cemetary. Now the cemetary is gone and houses have cropped up everywhere. Ghana needs thinkers and not jokers. This should be a no brainer. Find land somewhere and relocate the Osu Cemetary. We also need to encourage crematoriums. Wake Up Nee Vanderpuye or whatever his name is. FOOLS!!!!

This is no rumour. I go to osu on a yearly basis to tend my late sisters grave. In 2012 much to my horror i realised her grave had been emptied... Another grave had been dug on top of where she had rested peacefully for 33 years.. And obviously her remains removed and disposed off by someone. What was even more distressful was the very people in charge there had advised me to redo the grave in 2003 with terrazzo to ensure it was not removed. So as far as i am concerned it is no rumour... It is happening. In the uk they leave the body for 100 years before removal to a mass grave. Cremation is the best way forward....

In a town I lived before, it was 25 years, after that the remains would be removed. Within that 25 yeras, if the familiy relatives do not regularly maintin the grave and allow bush to consume it, they will receive some grace period (two weeks) to clear there. Should they refuse, the grave will be dug, remains removed and space reserved.
We need regulations and these must be enforced and respected too. Otherwise the confusion will always be "basaa"
