The Juaso Senior High School (SHS) in Asante-Akim South has appealed to government to do everything possible to complete a number of abandoned structures in the school to create the right environment for effective academic work.
These include a four-unit teachers bungalow, a headmaster’s accommodation and a home science block, work on all of which started 17 years ago.
They are now at different stages of completion but have been abandoned due to funding problems.
The call comes amid daunting challenges of getting decent housing for the over 70 teaching staff.
Mr. Joseph Adasi, the headmaster, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that just two of the teachers live on the school campus, and said this is not helping the effective supervision of the about 400 boarding students.
He (the headmaster) has for the past eight years been making daily round trips of about 20 kilometres to work.
The GNA visited the school under STAR-Ghana’s sponsored media auditing and tracking of development projects, the goal of which is to help shine a spotlight on how government funds impacts on the lives of the people.
Mr. Adasi also expressed worry with the slow pace of work on a three-storey girls dormitory being built for the SHS.
The project, which is being financed by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), commenced in December 2010 and had since 2011, stalled.
He said while they struggled to find space for the girls, the contractors, FRANKBERT Construction Works, appeared not eager to return to work anytime soon.
It is heartbreaking to see these huge investments go to waste, he said, as he urged managers of the economy to act to prevent that from happening.
