Drobonso, the district capital of Sekyere Afram Plains in the Ashanti Region, has been hooked to the national electricity grid as part of government’s efforts to light up every part of the country.
The project took three months to complete and has been hailed as a major step that would significantly boost economic activities in the district, ranked among the most deprived in the region.
On hand to perform the official inauguration held amid ecstatic scenes and fanfare was the Deputy Minister of Energy and Petroleum Resources, Mr John Abdulai Jinapor. He repeated the Mahama Administration’s commitment to ensure fair and equitable development and urged the people to take advantage of the facility to transform their living conditions.
The power should not just remain in the distribution lines but must be used to support economic production. The Deputy Minister, however, cautioned the people not to illegally tap the power and urged consumers to pay their bills regularly.
Nana Dwamena Dankwa Dwubisaw, the chief of Drobonso, said they were grateful to the government for the project. He used the occasion to complain about the slow pace of work on the 36-kilometre Kumawu-Drobonso road and appealed to the awarding authority to get the contractors to speed it up.
The delay, he said, was not only slowing down economic activities in the area, but making it difficult and nightmarish to transport the sick to health facilities for treatment. He also called for upgrading of streets in the town to befit its status as district capital.
Mr Fuseini Donkor, the District Chief Executive (DCE), urged the people to stand solidly behind the government to deliver on its mandate.
