The Canadian High Commissioner, His Excellency Jean-Pierre Bolduc, commissioned the Agona Kwanyako Maternal and Child Health Clinic in the Central Region, on Friday.

The clinic was built with a contribution of approximately ?58 million from the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, which is an important element of the intervention of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) in Ghana.

Approximately 25,000 people in Agona Kwanyako and its surrounding areas especially women and children will benefit from the services of health facility.

A release from the Canadian High Commission said High Commission selected this project because of its potential impact on women. It will help reduce the rate of maternal and child morality, which has been aggravated by the absence of resident medical staff.

The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives supports projects in a variety of sectors including health, nutrition, agriculture, education, water and sanitation, human resource development, promotion of human rights and the development of democracy. Emphasis is placed on projects that improve the social well being and economic welfare of the community, particularly of the disadvantaged and marginalized. Preference is given to proposals for modest funding to allow the fund to support a large number of requests.
