More than 1000 persons have been rendered homeless in last Saturday’s rainstorm that hit Wa and its environs.
About 100 houses had their roofs ripped off with some collapsing in the one hour storm.
Two persons who reported injured and admitted to the Wa Regional Hospital have been treated and discharged.
Some of the affected persons are currently living with relatives and friends.
About 80 guinea fowls, 450 birds and three goats were killed in the storm, when the building in which they were being housed collapsed on them.
Mr Issahaku Nuhu Putiaha, Wa Municipal Chief Executive ,who gave an update of the storm to the media, mentioned Dobile, Mangu, Kpaguri, Chorkor, Kambalipani, Sombo Residential Area and Kumbiehi as the worse affected communities in the municipality.
He said the Mangu Central Mosque, a 16-seater KVIP, Huriya and Fongo Primary Schools had their roofs ripped off while the building of St Cecilia Junior High School collapsed.
Three electrical poles also collapsed in the storm.
The Municipal Chief Executive estimated the cost of the disaster at GH? 800,000.00, saying the amount is too huge for the assembly to shoulder and make life meaningful to the affected persons.
He appealed to National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), benevolent and civil society organisations, as well as non-governmental organisations and donor countries to come to the aid of the affected.
Mr Putiaha said the Municipal Disaster Management Committee had decided to provide food items and other relief materials such as student mattresses, blankets and plastics for the upkeep of the victims.
“Many of the affected have been traumatised and we need to provide them with decent places to stay before the rains set in,” he said.
Mr Salahudeen Bin Alhassan, Wa Municipal NADMO Coordinator, said the staff of his outfit are on the field to assess and collate data on the damage caused by the storm.
