Acute water shortage hits Kwaasi in Brong Ahafo

The people of Kwaasi, a farming community in the Nkoranza District, are facing an acute water problem because the only stream in the area has dried up.

They walk about two kilometres to the nearest town, Busunya, to fetch water from boreholes.

Mr John Kofi Amoah, an opinion leader in the town, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Kwaasi that the problem had affected economic activities in the area.

''Women report late to join their husbands on the farm and are compelled to leave the farm earlier to go and fetch water for household activities'', he said.

Mr Amoah said school children also reported late to school as they spent hours in queues at the boreholes at Busunya.

He said the District Assembly had built a borehole in the area but because a pump had not been fixed to it, the people could not use it.

He appealed to the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Kwame Ampofo-Twumasi, to expedite action on the borehole to alleviate the suffering of the people.
