One Person has been shot dead and a police officer critically injured in a gun battle between the police and some Konkombas at ‘Nigeria camp’ near Mpahar in the Central Gonja district of the Northern region.

The Assemblyman for the Nigeria camp electoral area Dedzada Kofi Francis who confirmed the incident to Starr News said the deceased is yet to be identified.

"The konkombas shot at the police officers who were there to prevent them from putting DDT in the river to catch fish, the police man dodged the bullet and it hit one of the Konkombas and he died.

"The policeman run away, and they caught his colleague and beat him severely. He is currently at the Mpahar hospital," the assemblyman narrated.

The two police officers were reportedly at the Bontsut river pond on the orders of the Mpaharwura Mohammed, Chief of Mpahar, to stop the konkombas from fishing in the river with poisonous chemicals.

There have been recent clashes between the konkombas and the Gonjas leaving around the river over claims that the Kokombas use harmful chemicals to fish in the river.

The development has prompted the traditional authorities in the area to seek police protection around the river in order to maintain peace and order.

Starr News’ Eliasu Tanko, who has been monitoring development around the area, reports that the Konkombas attacked the officers because they were being prevented from fishing in the river.
