Deputy Minister for Education Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has said that government is unlikely to complete all 200 community day senior high schools before the period as stipulated.
Ghana’s 1992 Republican Constitution stipulates that the country must embrace a progressively free Senior High School education ten years upon the coming into being of the Constitution.
However, this is the first time a government has commenced implementing that constitutional requirement since 1993.
Only four out of the 200 schools promised by President John Dramani Mahama have been commissioned so far in the first four years of his administration.
But in an exclusive interview with 3FM’s Alfred Ocansey, Mr. Ablakwa stated that government is still committed to fulfilling its pledge of building 200 community day schools in the first term.
“I can assure you that there is the commitment to fulfill the pledge of 200 community day schools in the first term.
“As we speak I cannot say for certain that we will achieve all 200 but these projects are at various stages of completion.
“The President has already commissioned four and there are another fourteen which have been completed ready for commissioning and have not yet been commissioned and there are another one hundred and twenty three at various stages of completion.
“I will say that we will achieve that promise substantially but for now, I cannot say for certain that for now all the 200 will be completed on schedule; that is by the end of the first term.
“These schools are needed and I want to assure you that the commitment is there to achieve this promise that has been made.”
