The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has described the March 5 National Sanitation Day exercise as a successful one.

The AMA attributed the success to its effective education drive prior to the exercise, which coincided with preparations for Sunday’s Independence Day celebrations.

The mayor of Accra, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, led the exercise.

“The Chief Executive himself was leading the exercise, that is, the mayor of Accra, Oko Vanderpuye. We first went to the Independence Square, from there we came to the Arts Centre… to the [General] Post Office…and the staff of HFC Bank had also organised themselves [cleaning].

“From there, we went to Agbogbloshie where a lot of work had gone on. Looking at the volume of refuse that had been deposited by the road side, we can see that a lot of work had gone on there.

“In fact, people have actually come out this weekend to participate in the exercise. So, overall, this [month’s] exercise, so far as the National Sanitation Day exercise is concerned, …was very successful because of the awareness that we created prior to the exercise,” the Public Relations Officer of the AMA, Numo Blafo III, said in an interview with Class News.
