School pupils
As part of measures in curbing the increasing percentage of failure at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), the Wa Municipal Assembly has enforced a bylaw barring pupils of basic schools from loitering about after 10pm.
Members of community watchdog committee have been directed to arrest pupils who flout this directive for the corresponding sanctions to be applied.
Parents who are also found to be aiding their wards to break the law will equally be sanctioned according to authorities of the assembly.
The municipality in the last couple of years recorded an overall worst performance partly because; there are no monitoring mechanisms in place to check pupils loitering late into the night.
In an interview with ultimatefmonline.com, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Issahaku Nuhu Putiaha said the development has become a source of worry to both parents and teachers.
“We have decided to purge ourselves of this by introducing these mechanisms to ensure that future BECE results are better”, he stated.
He disclosed that the measure was adopted in collaboration with the Municipal Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES), considering how essential teaching and learning is at the foundation stage for pupils.
According to him, parents who allow their wards out after the stated time could face various sanctions, indicating that stakeholders will not sit aloof while education in the area continues to record abysmal performance.
“We are determined to reverse this trend….we are investing in infrastructure to create a conducive environment for teaching and learning. We have moved very far to eliminate schools under trees and sheds”, he added.
