Jukwa (C/R), Dec.8, GNA - Mr Abraham Odoom, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Twifo-Hemang-Lower-Denkyira, on Saturday announced that the Jukwa secondary school (JUSEC) would be upgraded into a model agriculture institution next year.
He said the institution would train students in agricultural science to help facilitate government's agricultural policies and programmes.
Mr Odoom announced these at the 12th anniversary and maiden speech and prize-giving day of the school, under the theme "Developing a community based school-the role of the community".
He said in preparation towards the upgrading, JUSEC was undertaking projects with assistance from the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) and the German Development Cooperation (GTZ) to ensure success of the programme.
Mr Odoom announced that the FAO, under its 'Tele-Food and growing connection projects' involving piggery, grass cutter breeding and vegetable cultivation, was assisting the school while GTZ was also helping in establishing a plantation.
He said the District Assembly would provide funds for the construction of a hostel and dinning hall for the school next year.
Mr Odoom appealed to the chiefs and people to give the assembly moral and financial support so that it could assist in transforming the school into one of the best in the Central Region.
Mr Odoom asked the students to desist from social vices and study hard to enable them become responsible citizens.
The headmistress of the school, Ms Regina Amam, regretted that some qualified students, could not gain admission to the institution due to the lack of adequate classrooms and dormitories.
She appealed to individuals, organisations and the government to assist the school construct a library, infirmary, science laboratory, staff accommodation, a decent kitchen and dining hall.
The headmistress, was however, full of praise for the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) for constructing a block of two classrooms for the school.
Ms Amam commended the students for their academic performance amidst difficulties facing the school, adding that of the 110 candidates presented for the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination this year, 47 passed in six subjects.
The FAO resident representative, Dr Anotolio Ndong Mba, inaugurated a computer laboratory, piggery and grass cutter
projects, and said he was highly impressed at the able manner the school had carried out the programme.
