Asamankese(E/R), Jan 8, GNA - A Circuit Court at Asamankese remanded in prison custody, Kwasi Gafa, a farmer, who allegedly threatened to stab his former girlfriend to death if she did agree to return to him.
Gafa pleaded not guilty to the charge of threatening to kill Margaret Akakpo with a penknife at Amenase, near Suhum. Detective Inspector Osei Owusu, prosecuting, told the Court that Gafa befriended Akakpo some years ago and had a child with her. The Prosecutor said persuasions by Akakpo and her family for Gafa to perform the marriage rites for Akakpo proved futile. Insp Owusu said Gafa also persistently beat Akakpo for "no apparent reason" and the victim decided to end their relationship. According to Insp Owusu, Gafa, threatened to kill Akakpo if she did not rescind her decision.
The Prosecutor said on December 11, 2003, at about 1000 hours Gafa went to Akakpo's house and requested to see her indoors for a discussion but she refused.
Insp Owusu told the court that when the suspect attempted to drag Akakpo into the room, a struggle ensued and Gafa drew a knife and threatened to kill her if she did not agree to his request. The Prosecutor said Akakpo managed to escape to Teacher Mante a nearby village and spent the night with some relatives. She informed her uncles in Koforidua and Accra about the development and they reported the matter to the police.
