Apam (C/R), Jan. 16, GNA - The Gomoa District Assembly has presented 10 bicycles valued at 6.3 million cedis to the District Secretariat of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for use by its Zonal officers.

Making the presentation at Apam on Thursday, Miss Joyce Aidoo the District Executive said the bicycles were to be used to educate the people on the need to prevent bushfires.

Miss Aidoo said they were being equipped to go to the corners of the district to preach the message on prevention of disasters. She advised them to be courteous in approach to their work in order not to incur the displeasure of the people.

"If you tell a person living in a dilapidated building to demolish the building, he or she would not take it kindly without explaining the implications of his or her living in that building", she advised. Miss Aidoo urged NADMO staff to advise politicians to organise their campaigns devoid of insults and hecklings of opponents to ensure that the peace the people were enjoying was not disturbed.

The Central Regional Co-ordinator of NADMO, Mr William Adjei-Benni said his organization had realized that one of the greatest disasters was unemployment since it was the root cause of anti social activities like armed robbery and prostitution. He said the organization had formed disaster volunteer groups to mobilise and support the unemployed to embark on income generating ventures like farming.

Mr Adjei-Benni expressed gratitude to the assembly for providing 6.1 million cedis for the rehabilitation of a motor -bike belonging to the organization.

He appealed to other districts in the region to support the organization to perform.

He cautioned the staff against misuse of the bicycles. Mr Daniel Kojo Andorful, Gomoa District Co-ordinator of the NADMO appealed for relief items to support fishermen at Gomoa Fetteh who had their fishing gear destroyed by storm and the chief of Gomoa Okyereko who had his pineapple farm destroyed by bushfire.
