Tema, Jan 29, GNA - The Greater Accra Regional Cordinating Council has set up a committee to resolve the impasse among the political leaders in the Tema Municipality to ensure a smooth administration, Shiekh I. C. Quaye, Greater Accra Regional Minister, said on Thursday. He urged residents to remain calm while the committee looked into the issue.

Sheihk Quaye said this at a Peoples' Assembly held in Tema and was in response to a question.

Since 2001 there has been a sour relations between Mr Samuel Evans Ashong Narh, Tema Municipal Chief Executive; Mr Ishmael Ashitey, Minister of Trade, Industry and President's Special Initiatives on one side and Mr Abraham Ossei Aidooh, Member of Parliament (MP) for Tema West Constituency.

Mr Aidoo has refused to attend assembly meetings and his continuous absenteeism compelled the assembly to expel him. Fifty-six people including school children asked questions and most of them centred on the relations between the political leaders, environmental/developmental issues, security, housing and unemployment. On sanitation, Shiekh Quaye pledged that efforts were being made to tackle the issue to rid the city of unsanitary conditions. He recounted the socio-economic situation before the New Patriotic Party's (NPP's) administration and said the Government was on the right track with its developmental plans.

Mr Narh, Mr Ashitey and Mr Emmanuel K. Teye, MP for Ashaiman, took turns to respond to allegations and questions with all of them saying that development projects in their areas were on course. While Mr Narh said streetlights were being installed and some have been rehabilitated in parts of the city. Mr Teye said Ashaley-Botwe and its environs would soon have water as work was in progress. On the TEXPO site at Baatsona, he said, documentation on the land was being done and that the area would be utilized fully, adding: "Its present use as a market is temporary."
