Fishermen on the Volta Lake at Ekye-Amanfrom in the Afram Plains South District, on Monday, 27 February ended up catching three manatees when they went fishing in the morning.

According to the fishermen, this is their first time catching anything other than fish in their trade.

Manatees are mostly herbivorous marine mammals also known as sea cows because they are slow plant-eaters, peaceful and similar to cows on land. They often graze on water plants in tropical seas.

Manatees typically breed once every two years; generally only a single calf is born. Gestation lasts about 12 months and to wean the calf takes a further 12 to 18 months.
