Lawyer charged with assault

Bawku (U/E), Feb. 22, GNA- A politician and lawyer in the Upper East Region, Mr. John Akparibo Ndebugre, was on Friday put before a Bawku Circiut court for causing harm and threat of death.

He pleaded not guilty and the court presided by Mr. Jacob Boom granted him a self-recognisance bail in the sum of 10 million cedis with surety to re-appear on February 26.


Prosecuting, Police Detective Sergeant Augustine Yirenkyi, said on January 21, Mr. Ndebugre had exchange of words with one Patrick Ayaaba, on the court premises.


He explained that in October last year Mr. Ndebugre sent Ayaaba and one Stephen Atule to court for allegedly threatening to eliminate him if he did not stop defending thieves in court.

He said Mr. Ndebugre who was unhappy with the adjournment of that case, began casting insinuations against Ayaaba and Atule to which Ayaaba reacted.


Sergeant Yirenkyi explained that in the course of the exchanges, Mr. Ndebugre allegedly hit the mouth of Ayaaba with his fist resulting in a deep cut on the latter's lower lip which bled profusely. He said Mr. Ndebugre then issued threatening words such as "I will kill you with my new gun" in the presence of the judge, police officers, prison officers at the court premises.


He said a formal complaint was lodged by Ayaaba at the Bawku District Police Station where he was later issued a police medical form for treatment.
