Lawra (UW/R), March 5, GNA - The Government is spending 15 billion cedis to connect ten communities in the Lawra District to the National Electricity Grid this year, Mr. Ambrose Dery, a Deputy Attorney-General announced on Monday.

Communities earmarked to enjoy the facility are Babile, Yagtori, Brifor, Kunyukuo, Tanchara, Zambo, Basabile, Kokoligo, Goziiri and Gengengkpe.

Mr. Dery made this known when he interacted with the chiefs and elders of the Lawra paramountcy during a working visit to the area. He said the extension of electricity to these areas was part of the government's policy of opening up the rural areas to development. He appealed to the chiefs to organise their people to construct fire belts round the electricity poles in order to protect them from bushfires.

Other issues discussed during the interaction included, the opening of the new voters' register, the need for peace during the next general elections and revenue mobilisation for district assemblies to carry out their development programmes.

Mr. Dery advised young men from the area who usually migrated to the south during this season of the year to stay and register before embarking on their journeys.

He also appealed to the chiefs to prevail upon citizens resident outside the area to come and register since that would bring some benefit to the communities.

He said the government would ensure that peace prevailed during the period and appealed to the chiefs to help keep the peace. On revenue mobilisation, he urged the chiefs to ensure that their people met their obligations to the assembly since the revenue generated internally would determine how much common fund the assembly received to execute its development programmes.

Nana Oduro Numapau, District Electoral Officer, who briefed the chiefs on the procedures for the registration said this year's exercise had been designed to eliminate all electoral malpractices recorded in previous elections.
