Ashaiman (G/A), March 8, GNA- Mr Alfred Agbesi, a Tema based legal practitioner was elected the NDC parliamentary candidate for the Ashaiman constituency at a delegates congress at Ashaiman near Tema. He won 96 votes against his opponent, Mr Anthony Afenyo, proprietor of Saint Mary's Preparatory school at Ashaiman who had 22 votes.
In 1996, Lawyer Agbesi contested the seat together with Mr Franklin Aheto and won, however the election was held again at another time because of some technical issues and he lost to Mr Aheto.
In the 2000 elections he declared his intention to contest again but the NDC leadership did not allow any primaries in the constituency. Lawyer Agbesi therefore went independent but he lost to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate Mr Emmanuel Teye.
When the electoral officers who conducted the elections announced the results, the delegates hailed the result.
Looking calm and relaxed, lawyer Agbesi said together with the support of the constituents he would ensure that the Ashaiman health post is upgraded and build more schools.
He said he would continue with his good intentions of promoting development in Ashaiman and come out with a youth policy in order to direct the affairs of the youth to become focus in their lives. When voted into power he would meet with the constituents every three months and brief them on parliamentary proceedings to enable them contribute their quota so that they are not kept in the dark.
Mr Afenyo pledged to support lawyer Abgesi to win the seat.
Mr Joshua Alabi, Greater Accra Regional chairman of the NDC urged all NDC activists to vote at their various constituencies and that they should "never to travel to the Volta region to vote because we have good records so definitely we will win".
