VR Electoral Commission director urges all to register

Ho, March 15, GNA - Mr Mohammed Addoquaye, Volta Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC) on Monday said it is imprudent to refuse to register as a voter because of a perceived despondency over political issues at a time when the register has become the only means of personal identification.

He therefore advised all eligible voters to register when the exercise begins on Tuesday, while they make up their mind whether to vote or not.

Mr Addoquaye was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the level of the EC's preparedness for the two-week re-registration exercise.

Referring reports that some political party activists had decided not to participate in the registration exercise, Mr Addoquaye reminded Ghanaians that one could not hold certain political offices if the person is not registered as a voter.

He said all 1,965 polling stations have been supplied with registration materials to enable them start the exercise on schedule, adding that additional supplies were ready to be dispatched to the various stations to ensure uninterrupted work.

He said accreditation for party agents could be done at the regional and district levels.

Mr Addoquaye said the problems of inaccessible areas in the proposed Krachi-West and the North-Tongu Districts have been taken care of.

He said the EC has trained back-up staff to fill vacancies of registration officers who for one reason or other would not be available for the exercise.
