Hohoe, May 3, GNA - Mr James Komla Dogbe, Hohoe District Chief Executive (DCE), said the assembly has so far spent 29.5 million cedis to sponsor students in tertiary institutions.

In an interview with the GNA at Hohoe, the DCE said the beneficiaries, 20 in Training Colleges, two in the Universities and 10 in the Polytechnic received 500,000 ceids each.

Mr James Komla Dogbe expressed regret that even though 42 students in Senior Secondary Schools also received financial assistance, last year's Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) results of schools in the district were discouraging.

He said, 131.9 kilometres of feeder roads in the area were undergoing routine maintenance while, Kpeve-Hohoe and Hohoe-Lolobi roads were being repaired and drains were being constructed in the Hohoe township. Mr Dogbe said work on blocks of three-unit classroom at Santrokofi-Benua and Alavanyo-Agoxoe, a kindergarten block at Hohoe-Newtown, one nurses' quarters at Liati-Soba and a teachers quarters at Tafi-Abuife have been completed.

Others projects that were completed are extension of pipe-borne water to Gbi-Wegbe, Godenu and to Low Cost housing area in Hohoe township. The DCE said 12 European Union Projects under phase three and two HIPC projects were in progress.

Mr Dogbe said for the first time in so many years, the assembly has increased its revenue collection during the first quarter of the year adding, that this did not happen by chance.

He said: "Steps were taken to ensure that some of the loopholes such as inappropriate accounting for money collected were dealt with including collecting night tolls from traders". 03 May 04
