The Saboba District Assembly and the Saboba Youth Parliament have reached an agreement permitting the latter to assist the Assembly in revenue collection on market days in the district.
The Saboba Youth Parliament, after the agreement, has so far collected GHc4, 336.00 in revenue from Gbangbampong, Wapuli and the Saboba Township markets.
Alhaji Imoro Mustapha, Saboba District Finance Officer, in a response to questions by Young Parliamentarians during a sitting of the Saboba Youth Parliament at Saboba on March 22, this year, said the Assembly was weak in revenue generation and welcomed the youth group to assist it to collect revenue on market days.
Alhaji Mustapha, who received the revenue generated so far by the Young Parliamentarians at Saboba, said the Assembly had recorded improvement in its internally generated funds since the engagement of the Young Parliamentarians.
He was happy that the young Parliamentarians collaborated with the District Assembly to generate resources for the development of the area calling on them to continue to work hard to generate more revenue from the markets.
Meanwhile, the District Police Command has designated some Community Protection Police personnel to offer security to the Young Parliamentarians, who collected the revenue on market days.
Mr Takal Kasalku Jeremiah, Speaker of Saboba Youth Parliament said the youth’s participation in the revenue mobilisation for the Assembly had empowered them to demand accountability from the duty-bearers in the District on how the revenues were spent.
The Saboba Youth Parliament is part of the one-year Youth Parliament project being implemented by the Youth Empowerment for Life (YEfL), a non-governmental organisation, and supported by STAR-Ghana with funding from the UKaid, DANIDA and European Union.
The Youth Parliament, which is modelled on the country’s Parliamentary system, serves as a platform for youth of different communities to participate in discussing common issues affecting their communities.
