To help curb the sanitation challenge confronting the Senior High Technical School for the Deaf at MaAmpong-Akuapem, in the Eastern region of Ghana, staff of the Transactional Products and Services (TPS) unit of Stanbic Bank Ghana, have constructed an 8-seater toilet facility for the school.
The GHS 35,000 project will serve all 285 boys in the school, who used to share a KVIP facility with all 169 females of the school.
According to Head of TPS at Stanbic Bank, John Prempeh, the unit and the entire Stanbic Bank share a common objective to provide support to the communities in which it operates and beyond, through its Corporate Social Initiatives (CSI).
“This project was necessitated by our bid to complement the many CSIs done by Stanbic Bank Ghana Limited,” Mr. Prempeh said.
The Headmaster of the school, Joseph Sam, expressed gratitude to the Bank for fulfilling its promise, and urged other bodies and institutions to join in the country’s development agenda, especially regarding sanitation and environmental health.
The school runs courses such as Home Economics, Visual Arts and Technical and General Arts, through sign language as its total communication and instructional model. The school had 57 out of 87 students presented for the 2017 WASSCE, qualifying for various tertiary institutions.
John Prempeh said the unit embarked on this noble mission with the aim of re-echoing what humanity stands for.
Casting their nets beyond their immediate surroundings, staff of the bank started the project last year after receiving reports from the students that, overcrowding was compelling male and female students to use the same toilet facility. This, the staff of Stanbic found to be unacceptable and got them to contribute to the project.
In 2014, the unit donated to an orphanage at Krobo Odumase. In 2015, TPS donated library books to Adamu Pantwuma Primary School near Asamankese in the Eastern region. The unit, again in 2016, renovated the Children’s Ward of the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital and provided them with mattresses, bed sheets, and other items.
