Some major streets of Accra were full of excitement when vans belonging to the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City arrived to distribute food to Persons with Disability (PwDs) and children on the streets including young hawkers.
At least 350 packs of nutritious meals were distributed to beneficiaries in the New Year ‘Festive Food Drive’ which was organised by Kempinski in partnership with Police Officers Wives Association (POLWA).
The ‘Festive Food Drive’ made its first stop at Kawukudi main street, moved to the 37 Hospital area, Airport, Shiashie and through to Accra Central.
At the Airport Street, hawkers fled at the sight of the police officers who led the food van with the fear of being arrested for hawking in a restricted area.
They, however, rushed back to have their share of the food after persuasions from the police that they were there for charity.
Briefing the media on the gesture, the General Manager of Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, Manish Nambiar indicated that it formed part of the hotel’s corporate social responsibilities and reiterated the importance of showing love and compassion to the less privileged, particularly during Christmas.
According to him, homeless children and street beggars are deprived of basic needs including nutrition, thus the step to put a smile on their faces by at least feeding them during the festive season.
“It’s a great sense of pride to work for a brand that’s able to do something for others and showing love and empathy towards others is one of our key brand values. We’re happy to see the smiles on the faces of the children. This is why we set aside a special day like this to give back to our community,” he said.
He noted, the third 'Festive Food Drive' also offered the opportunity for staff of the hotel to appreciate the public for contributing to the success of the brand they work for.
Prior to the 'Festive Food Drive, the five-star luxury hotel hosted senior media personnel in Ghana to a cocktail event.
The event offered the platform for management of the hotel to interact and dialogue with the journalists on how best they can deepen their ties in the coming year.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Nambiar disclosed Kempinski Gold Coast City Hotel has partnered the World Health Organisation for some projects, as well as the International Women’s Association to raise funds to acquire cervical cancer detecting machines.
The Hotel, according to him was also working with the Office of the First Lady on the Infantile Malaria Charity Partnership Project as well as the Embassy of Israel on the Save A Child’s Heart, under which children with complicated cardiac problems were sent to Israel for surgery.
