Awutu-Mankessim (C/R), Jan. 6, GNA - A member of the Awutu Traditional Council, Nai Kwao Otuo V, has warned the electorate not to burden Members of Parliament in their constituencies with their personal economic and other problems.
Nai Otuo said such act often tends to detract the attention of the MPs from their assigned national duties and in some cases demoralise them.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at his Awutu-Mankessim palace, Nai Otuo described the practice as shameful and unacceptable and counselled Ghanaians with such behaviour to stop.
He said voting one to Parliament does not imply that "we should force him or her to address our personal problems for us."
Nai Otuo explained that people mandated to represent the community in Parliament are by the power invested in them required to make laws that would protect and guide the interest of the people and the nation and not to resolve the pressing financial problems of their constituents as some voters perceive.
It is therefore wrong for any eligible voter to think that after voting somebody to power that person is by a constitutional provision obliged to solve problems of those who voted him or her to power, he added.
He said the constitution demands that the electorate should rather assist their MPs to harness all available manpower and financial resources for the speedy development of their constituencies. Nai Otuo charged churches, Islamic religious groups and chiefs to help educate the people on the responsibilities of MPs and that of the people.
