The Birim Central Municipal Assembly and the Business Advisory Centre have educated the people in the municipality on the “One District, One Factory” initiative at a day’s consultative meeting at Oda in the Eastern Region.
The participants included; the media, departmental heads and members from the Small-Scale Enterprises.
Mr Selorm Klingo of the Ministry of Trade and industry office in Koforidua told the people that the One District, One Factory was one of the flagship initiatives of the government to expand the industrial base of the country and to help reduce unemployment.
He said: “The programme is aimed at establishing at least one factory or an enterprise in each of the 216 districts in the country as a means of creating economic growth that will accelerate the development of those areas and to create jobs for the teeming youth.”
Mr Klingo said each of the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies were expected to set up District Implementation Teams, which would be responsible in carrying out the initiative at the distribution level.
Participants at the meeting expressed concerns by the constitution and the functionality of the implementation teams and the financial cost of preparing a business proposal and called on the authorities to have a second look at it.
Mr Kwame Amponsah, the Assistant Coordinating Director of the Birim Central Municipal Assembly, who represented the Municipal Chief Executive assured the participants that their concerns would be forwarded to the appropriate quarters for attention.
Mr Richard Mongson, the Municipal Head of the Business Advisory Centre and the moderator of the programme said the meeting was aimed at clearing the difficulties in understanding the initiative.
