The Deputy Communications Director of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Constituency, Ing. Gomashie Edem Wisdom has urged government to fix the deplorable Ahwetieso-Tarkwa road to save lives.

More than a hundred angry residents of the area on Wednesday, April 10, blocked the main road, set ablaze car tyres in the middle of the road and prevented vehicles from moving in and out of the municipality for more than five hours.

They were clad in red bands and chanted war songs.

The situation brought business activities to halt in the area.

This latest demonstration follow the failure by the government to heed to a two-week ultimatum by the Concerned Citizens of Tarkwa to fix the road, which has become practically unmovable.

Speaking to some residents after the protest, they said they have had a bear with airborne diseases due to the dust that emanated from the road as heavy duty mining vehicles and other commercial ones.

The latest action follows the failure by government to heed to a two-week ultimatum by the Concerned Citizens of Tarkwa to fix their roads, which have become practically unmotorable.

Food vendors and hawkers also said they have been forced out of business, because their merchandises get soiled by dust and mud, making them unwholesome for consumption, thereby preventing patrons from buying them

Some also warned their Member of Parliament, Mireku Duker not to step foot in the town to campaign for his seat in 2020 without fixing the road first.

They added that the MP is only good at paying lip service to their complaints and choose to take credit did things which are not material value to them.

“Duker came to tell us that we should retain him in 2020 because he has sent three Muslims to Mecca; what has that gotten to do with our most pressing need”, one woman said.

It would be recalled that last year, October, the Road Minister, Hon. Amoako Atta came to the area and promised to fix the road within two weeks time.

The residents of Tarkwa have vowed to vote against this current administration of the new patriotic party if it fails to fix their roads immediately.

In a statement signed by the NPP's Communicator and copied to Daniel Kaku of GhanaWeb, bemoaned that "Time passed quickly, and the road has tripled in causing harm to the inhabitants of Tarkwa; dust all over the deplorable stretch, dust-induced diseases has taken over the lives of People living along that stretch, Medical Emergencies being delayed leading to some deaths, Pregnant Women getting Miscarriages among others".

He emphasized that "This is a town with 3 Mining Companies, AngloGold Ashanti, Iduapriem, Goldfields Tarkwa Mine and Ghana Manganese Company".

He added These companies contribute soo much in terms of Corporate Taxes, Royalties, Dividends and Foreign Direct Investment to our country than any town in Ghana currently can provide in terms of Expoitation of Natural Resources. The Domestic Tax returns of Tarkwa alone is soo much in the coffers of our country".

He said "I support every good course that will bring peace and prosperity to people forgetting about party colours. It is sad".

He, therefore, blamed some appointees who are working the Western Regional Coordinating Council for sabotaging the sitting MP for the area.

He appealed "Let us put our best foot forward and fix the Tarkwa roads now".

Below is the full statement

TARKWA ROAD

To Who It May Concern.

Ing. Gomashie Edem Wisdom writes,

The state of Tarkwa roads (most especially, Ahwetieso-Tarkwa road section) was in a state of anomy when the NPP won power and was sworn in 2017.

It became the number 1 task for a first time MP, which time will later tell as one of the most vibrant MPs of the 7th Parliament.

Hon. George Mireku Duker have exploited all the channels in government to make this road a better one. The MCE also played his role in getting it fixed.

The lobbying kept on, Chiefs of the great Wassaland added their voices through Presidential encounters and iced the cake with a demonstration last year expressing their displeasure to government.

Hon. Duker was under severe pressure, got the Minister of Roads to Tarkwa who came and assured the Chiefs and People of Tarkwa of their plea being heard and made a nice promise.

Time passed quickly, and the road has tripled in causing harm to the inhabitants of Tarkwa; dust all over the deplorable stretch, dust-induced diseases has taken over the lives of People living along that stretch, Medical Emergencies being delayed leading to some deaths, Pregnant Women getting Miscarriages among others.

At this stage, The People has come to believe that, the local Political heads (MP, MCE) has failed them and this point even if not the case is well hammered by Self-Styled Regime Changers and some group of Opposition Elements which I wouldn’t blame much because results matters.

The Tarkwa road matters is soo sad.

Economically

This is a town with 3 Mining Companies, AngloGold Ashanti, Iduapriem, Goldfields Tarkwa Mine and Ghana Manganese Company.

These companies contribute soo much in terms of Corporate Taxes, Royalties, Dividends and Foreign Direct Investment to our country than any town in Ghana currently can provide in terms of Expoitation of Natural Resources.

The Domestic Tax returns of Tarkwa alone is soo much in the coffers of our country.

Politically

The current NPP government has enjoyed the highest votes in Tarkwa-Nsuaem being the highest votes ever in the Political history of Western Region and second across the whole country led by Hon. George Mireku Duker in 2016.

Is this the way to reward them back?

I’m not sounding tribalistic here, but if Kumasi Town Roads could receive a €50 million uplift, what denies Tarkwa of same, less or more?

Today, a group of young and old folks of Tarkwa took to the streets and once again expressed their displeasure.

I support every good course that will bring peace and prosperity to people forgetting about party colours. It is sad

There is a greater scent of Political Sabotage in this matter.

This Sabotage must come to an end.

The People appointed and sitting at Regional Coordinating Council to ensure this is done and enjoying the fruits of Sabotage, I say Ayekoo to all of them.

The People close to the President of the Republic, who negates the Tarkwa roads out of reach, I say to you Ayekoo.

To some members of the NPP who may not feel comfortable with this message, I humbly remind you that, my NPP membership card is still intact.

Let us put our best foot forward and fix the Tarkwa roads now.

We may not get the second chance to explain to the people. The time is now

Signed!
