Goore (U/E) Jan. 24, GNA - A sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a 300-million-cedis Health Centre took place at Goore near Bawku, in the Upper East Region at the weekend.
Work began in January and is expected to complete in August this year. It would comprise a consulting room, maternity, children, female and male wards.
It is being financed with funds from a Holland-based non-governmental organization (NGO), Harmalten Foundation (HF), while the community would provide communal labour.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Wiljo Fleurkens, President of HF, noted with concern the long distance the sick and pregnant women had to travel to receive medical attention resulting in a high rate of mortality in the area.
Mr. Fleurkens indicated that quality healthcare delivery should not be left in the hands of government alone, but it should be of concern of all well-meaning people to reduce the sufferings of the rural dwellers. He disclosed that nurses' quarters would be constructed to accommodate personnel to ensure that healthcare delivery was available on a 24-hour basis.
The Bawku Municipal Chief Executive, (MCE) Mr Abdul-Rahman Gumah, pledged the assembly's continued assistance to the project and the posting of qualified personnel to man the facility.
He appealed to the people to register with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in order to access better healthcare. Mr. Gumah thanked the Foundation for the provision of the facility and urged the beneficiary communities to take proper care of it.
