Accra, Jan 28, GNA - Mr Ben Amoabeng-Peprah, Greater-Accra Regional Chairman of the Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA), has commended government for encouraging the private sector to speed up national development.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra, Mr Amoabeng-Peprah noted with satisfaction that the sector, being the engine of growth, was receiving the necessary boost. He said it was gratifying that private transport organisations were in a healthy competition with their counterparts in the public sector. "Where there is competition, the competitors normally come out with their best," he said.
The Regional PROTOA Chairman urged drivers to ensure regular maintenance since most accidents could be avoided if vehicles that were not road worthy were taken off the roads.
Mr Amoabeng-Peprah reiterated the call on drivers to observe traffic regulations, avoid speeding, wrong overtaking and the taking of alcohol while driving to reduce accidents.
He advised them to honour their tax obligations, to avoid unnecessary confrontation with the law enforcement agencies. The Regional Chairman hinted that his outfit would soon organise educational programmes on road safety to equip drivers with skills to keep them abreast with modern techniques.
Mr Daniel Borlabi, Regional Vice Chairman, commended the private towing companies for ridding the roads of broken down vehicles and appealed to the Ministry of Roads and Transport to assist them to live up to expectation.
