Takoradi market women trained on fire prevention and fire combat
The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Foundation has over 20 fire extinguishers to the leadership of the Takoradi Market Circle, after providing training on fire prevention and fire combat.
The Takoradi Market, a home to more than 2000 shops and stalls, which serves over 10,000 sellers, shoppers and hawkers according to Dr. Dominic Eduah, the Foundation's Executive Director needed to be safeguarded against any man-made disasters particularly fires and electrocutions.
He said safety was essential and believed that teaching safety to their immediate environment like men and women in the market may consolidate the gains made over the last ten years in terms of safe living within the market circle and its environs.
Dr. Eduah said their search in the market revealed spoilt fire extinguishers, hence, the donation of the extinguishers.
He noted that though safety was personal responsibility, it was imperative that people were made conscious of the need to promote safety.
Ms. Veronica Naa Adjeley Bonney, the Deputy Fire Boss for the Western Region encouraged the traders to make good use of the pieces of advice and education given them.
Mr. Francis Mensah, Regional Safety Officer of the PDS called on the traders to always employ the services of certified electricians to work on their wiring to avoid the use of substandard goods used by quacks.
He stressed the need for rewiring every two years.
"Now, we as a Service are bent on ensuring that right people do every wiring, whether commercial, industrial or domestic to curb the outbreak of Dr Bin-Salih said fires".
Mr. Kingsford Kwena Eshun, from the Regional Officer of the Energy Commission, said the commission had trained lots of certified practitioners and called on the public to patronize their services.
Nana Asempanaye II, the Takoradi Sub-Metro Director, was grateful to the GNPC Foundation for the support in helping to protect lives and properties in the market.
Madam Veronica Arthur, the Market Secretary expressed appreciation to the foundation for education on fire prevention.
