Koforidua, March 2, GNA- The former Executive Director of the Federation of International Women Lawyers, Ms Gloria Ofori-Boadu has noted that the fight for gender equality is gradually gaining grounds. She however cautioned women who are beginning to assert their fundamental human rights not to lord it over their male counterparts in other to ensure balance in human resource development.
Ms Ofori-Boadu was speaking at the opening of a two-day training of trainers workshop organized by the Women Assistance and Business Association (WABA) for women leaders in public life on Tuesday, in Koforidua. She said there was the need for gender equality in society to enhance the access of women to education, employment and economic freedom. She observed that although women constitute about 52 percent of the total population of the country, less than 30 per cent of them occupy leadership positions. "Their empowerment and social emancipation is imperative because they form the majority," Ms Ofori-Boadu said.
The Eastern Regional Director of the National Commission on Women and Development, Ms Jane Kwapong, asked women to support their fellow women in all avenues that tended to give practical meaning to the promotion of their rights society. Speaking on the "Rights of Women and Children", a resource person of WABA, Ms Leda Limann expressed the need for women to learn about the laws and conventions that facilitate the recognition of women in society. Forty (40) participants that comprise assembly members, unit committee members, representatives of the political parties and the churches are attending the two-day workshop.
