Kumasi, March 16, GNA- A lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has observed that quality basic education was the foundation for human resource development needed for national socio-economic advancement.
Nana Afia Amponsah Opoku-Asare, at the College of Arts and Social Sciences who made the call at the quadrennial delegates conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in Kumasi said lack of a sound primary education could undermine one's academic progress in future.
Nana Opoku-Asare asked teachers to make their students interested in issues that are related directly to the school curricula, saying it is the vital part of the communication process that results in greater interest, correct interpretation, clear understanding and the retention of what has been taught.
Mr Augustine Mensah, Ashanti Regional Chairman of GNAT, advised teachers to apply for study leave only when they had taught for a minimum of three years.
He expressed dissatisfaction about teachers who left the classrooms to for academic programmes without informing their immediate heads, warning that such people could have their appointments terminated.
