Berekum, March 17, GNA - Dr Sylvanus Lamiayi Lamptey, a lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, on Thursday suggested that physical education be made an examinable subject at the junior and senior secondary schools.
Dr Lamptey said this at the opening of the Seventh Biennial Congress of the Physical Education Association of Ghana at Berekum. The four-day congress is under the theme "Curbing indiscipline in society - The role of Physical Education and Sports".
He said the association would not accept using sports competitions in schools for testing Physical Education and called on the Congress to come out with recommendations for the way forward.
He attributed some undisciplined behaviours of students in education institutions to the absence of corporal punishment and expressed regret that "our schools now breed rapists, thieves, robbers and armed robbers, mobile phone snatching syndicates, among others.'' "The issue of curbing indiscipline in the country should start from the educational institutions since they produce future leaders", Dr Lamptey said.
Dr Lamptey expressed the hope that the Congress would come out with proposals on how best participation in PE and Sports could contribute to the elimination of indiscipline in our society, especially in schools and universities. Dr. Augustine Henry K. A. Pufaa, a Lecturer at UCC said Vice-President Aliu Mahama instituted the national campaign against indiscipline in response to the high level of undisciplined behaviour in the country.
He expressed regret that the campaign had not yielded the expected results and urged the Congress to be serious in their deliberations and come out with concrete ways to help address the canker.
