Wa, March 29, GNA - Mr Ambrose Dery, the Upper West Regional Minister has advised old boys of senior secondary schools to avoid the tendency to intervene in the disciplinary matters of their mother schools and rather gear their efforts towards assisting them to improve their academic standards.
He acknowledged the contribution of old boys in the provision of facilities for their alma mater but said that should not become a license for undue interference in the administration of the schools, especially when students were being disciplined for breach of regulations.
Mr. Dery gave the advice when he addressed the maiden annual get-together of the regional branch of the Lawra Senior Secondary School Old boys Association at Wa at the weekend.
Discipline, the Regional Minister noted, was a key requirement for academic excellence and urged old boys to ensure that they supported school authorities to maintain a congenial atmosphere for good academic work.
He urged them to give the establishment of an ICT center for the school a top priority, as it had become an important tool for the advancement of society.
Quality education, he said, should be the prime concern of all stakeholders and therefore, asked them to influence their colleagues to take up teaching appointment in the school.
He expressed regret that the school which was previously noted for producing the best science students in Northern Ghana, had lost that glory and urged the old boys to work hard in support of the authorities to bring back those standards.
Mr Mohammed Na-eem Kpedau, interim President of the branch, said they would undertake familiarization visits to the school, to acquaint themselves with challenges facing it, and offer assistance in areas in which they had the capacity to help.
