Accra, May 3, GNA - The 75th anniversary of the Richard Akwei Memorial School at Galloway in Accra would be marked in October this year.
This was stated by Mr Daniel Okai, Chairman of the School Management Committee (SMC) at a meeting of old students of the school in Accra at weekend to discuss the programme for the launching of the anniversary.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency after the meeting, Mr Okai who is also an old student of the school stressed the need for Ghanaians to support the development of their old schools, societies, communities and the nation.
He said they should contribute towards the advancement of the society irrespective of their social standing, religious persuasion and partisan affiliation.
Mr Okai called on the past students of the school to play active roles in the celebration to project the vision of the Founder after whom the institution is named. He asked them to pay regular visits to the School to keep abreast with the development of their Alma Mata and to encourage the present students and serve as their role models to maintain the high standard set in the past.
Mr Okai appealed to the old students to attend meetings of the Richard Akwei Memorial Old Students Association (RAMOSA) regularly and to ensure the active participation of as many of their colleagues as possible in activities to mark the anniversary. Mr Ebenezer Torsu, a member of staff who is also an old student of the School appealed to RAMOSA members to be careful, saying, "We would like to see you alive to support our school".
He reminded them of the School's pledge "I vow to make my school a first class one by playing my part well in all things at all times, in all places" and play their parts well to ensure honour for their School. The institution, which was formerly known as the Gold Coast National School was founded in October 1930.
It was renamed Ghana National School in 1957 when the country attained Independence and Richard Akwei Memorial School after the death of the founder.
