Accra, May 13, GNA - The Immediate Past President of Zonta Club of Accra, Madam Letitia Omaboe on Thursday said the Club was committed to work for the advancement of understanding, goodwill and peace in the world.
She made the statement in a welcoming address to install the Club's Officers and Board of Directors in Accra. The Club, which is non-partisan and non-sectarian, is aimed at fostering education and constructive work for girls and young women. Madam Omaboe noted that the outgoing officers and the Board of Directors worked and served as a team and urged the in-coming officers to live exemplary lives and be law-abiding. "In this way, we shall play our roles by continuing with the vision set out by our predecessors for the evolution of the club." She said the Club had completed the first phase of its multi-million-cedi service project at Amanfro in the Eastern Region and was in the process of constructing an external fence wall to secure it. When completed, the centre would, among other things, offer skilled training, medical service and counselling to women and their children. The new members of the Board for 2005-2007 are Madam Charity Hammond, Madam Vida Sunkwa-Mills and Madam Christine Adjei-Bawuah. The officers are Madam Lydia Kpodo, President; Madam Ellen Essilfie, Vice President; Madam Virginia Hesse, Recording Secretary; Madam Clara Fayorsey, Corresponding Secretary; Madam Joana Cobbinah, Treasurer and Madam Agnes Ahadzie, Assistant Treasurer.
As at February 28, last year, there were 1,245 Zonta Clubs in 67 countries. Zonta Club has its headquarters in Chicago. Zonta is a word from the Teton dialect of the Siouan stock of native America. The word signifies "honest and trustworthy."
