Bawku (U/E) May 16, GNA-The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr. Boniface Gambila on Saturday asked students to be disciplined to enable them to attain higher heights in life. He noted that with discipline and dedication students could perform better in their studies to justify the huge investment being made in their education.
Mr. Gambila made the call in a speech read on his behalf at the launch of the 40th anniversary and speech and prize giving day celebration of Bawku Secondary School at Bawku.
He called on students to avoid drug abuse, alcoholism, prostitution, pre-marital sex and hooliganism among other vices. Mr. Gambila said the government was determined to develop the country's human resource base towards wealth creation to improve the standards of living of the people.
He said government alone could not bear the cost of education due to the country's rapid population increase and the need to develop other sectors of the economy.
Mr Gambila, therefore, called on parents and old student associations to compliment government's efforts at improving the quality of education in the country.
The acting Bawku Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Abdul-Rahman Gumah, urged students to follow laid down rules in solving problems instead of applying force and crude techniques.
A former Headmaster, Mr. Robert Ajene, advised the students against the destruction of school properties during strikes and demonstrations. He reminded them that most schools in the Northern sector of the country lacked the requisite infrastructure and the destruction of school properties worsens the situation. The headmaster, Mr. Paul Apanga said the school, which was started with 50 students and a staff of 4 in 1963, has a current population of 1,421 with 65 staff. He commended the government for selecting the school for upgrading into a model educational institution.
