The AirtelTigo's initiative aims at bringing development in educational facilities
AirtelTigo has started the process of constructing a six-unit classroom block for Kotokuom R/C Primary School in the Atwima Mponua District which has not seen any renovation since it was built 70 years ago.
The Company would also provide furniture for the pupils and headmaster’s office of the school located in the Ashanti region, a statement signed and copied to the Ghana News Agency by Michael Sarpong Bruce, the Media Relations Officer of AirtelTigo, said.
It added that the gesture formed part of the company’s initiative to develop educational facilities in public schools in disadvantaged communities in the Ashanti, Bono and Ahafo Regions.
According to the statement, an opening ceremony was held in Atwima Mponua on December 19, 2019 and attended by the Odikro, opinion leaders and people of Kotokuom community, officials of Ghana Education Service and the school authorities.
It quoted Mr Eric Adadevoh, the Chief Human Resource Officer for AirtelTigo, as saying: “When we launched this initiative, we said one percent of our proceeds from airtime recharge by our customers in the three regions will go into development of educational facilities.
“This project is a demonstration of our commitment for the people and contribution to national development.
“This would not have been possible without the support of our valued customers. We are grateful to them for making it possible for us to impact lives positively in our communities."
Mr Nimoh Asante, the Circuit Supervisor of Education, was also quoted as saying; “Accessing AirtelTigo services only means contributing to our own development. What we give to AirtelTigo comes back to us.
“Today we are all witnesses to how this school project is going to benefit our underserved communities. What a thoughtful and wonderful intervention.”
According to the statement, the Odikro promised to mobilize community members to pull down the old structure to make way for the construction of the new school.
Nana Kwaku Boah also pledged his total commitment to the efficient management and maintenance of the school block after completion.
The Parent/Teacher Association of the School was quoted as saying, that the school had not undergone any major renovation since it was constructed 70 years ago.
The School currently has a population of about 263 pupils and the authorities envisage that enrolment would drastically increase after the construction, the statement said.
