NEQ: St. Peters, Yikrosec, four others in semi-finals

Yilo Krobo SHS has knocked out Pope John SHS and Aburi SHTS in a keen contest in the quarter-finals to book a place in the semi-finals of the coveted Nana Sir Ofori-Atta I National Energy Quiz following their victory in the first contest of the day.

Yikrosec polled 27 points with Pojoss and Aburi SHTS trailing with 21 and 24 points respectively.

In the second quarter-final contest, Asamankese SHS garnered 29 points to pip Saviour SHS and Oda SHS with 28 and 19 points respectively while St. Peter’s SHS made mincemeat of Nkawkaw SHS and Ofori Panyin SHS to proceed to the next stage of the competition.

The Persco boys recorded an impressive 37 points while their opponents, Nkawkaw SHS scored 18 and Ofori Panyin SHS, 24.

Host school for the quarter-final contests, Oyoko Methodist SHS with 26 points were victors over Osino SHTS, 21 and Larteh SHS 16 in another contest while Anum Presby SHS with 24 points also saw off New Nsutam SHTS and Adeiso Presby SHS with 16 and 10 points respectively.

Nkwatia Presby SHS also booked their ticket in the last contest of the quarter-finals with 26 points while St. Francis SHTS and Bepong SHS garnered a paltry 5 and 10 points respectively.

With these victories, the six successful schools have kept alive their hopes of winning the 2nd edition of the competition.

The six qualified schools say they are ready to progress in the National Energy Quiz all the way to the final.

They, however, have to go past other formidable opponents in the semis if their wishes are anything to go by as the stakes remain high in this contest.

In an interview, the winning contestants voiced their contentment with the results and promised to perform better in subsequent contests as they hope of making it to the finals, while contestants of the losing schools were disappointed in the outcome of the contest, but promised to prepare adequately for next year.

Meanwhile, organizers of the competition have released mouth-watering semi-final pairings slated for Thursday, 30th January, 2020.

Yilo Krobo SHS and Asamankese SHS will open the semi-final clashes in the first contest of the day while host school, Oyoko Methodist SHS will square off in what promises to be a keen contest with Anum Presby later on and St. Peter’s SHS locking horns with Nkwatia Presby SHS in the third and final semi-final slot.

The three winners of the three semi-final contests will meet in the grande final to determine the winner of the 2019/2020 competition.

The NEQ is designed to empower Senior High and Technical Schools with knowledge in the entire energy value chain including petroleum upstream and downstream, power generation, transmission and distribution, focuses on Power, Petroleum and Culture.

It equally aims at educating the youth in both Senior High Schools (SHS) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) on the energy sector.

The NEQ is sponsored by the Ghana Oil Company Limited, Ghana Grid Company Limited, the Energy Commission, Ghana Maritime Authority, Ghana National Gas Company Limited and the Petroleum Commission.

The annual competition which is run under the auspices of Nananom of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, is jointly organized by Eastern Star Awards Co. Limited in partnership with the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) and coordinated in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Energy.
