Nkwantakese(Ash), Jan. 12, GNA - Habitat for Humanity Ghana has provided 377 houses for four communities within the Afigya-Sekyere district of Ashanti within the past 10 years. The Nkwantakese Affiliate, which included Pampatia, provided 214 houses and Agona Affiliate comprising, Kona and Tano-Dumase provided 163 houses.
Mr Alexander Adu, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity Ghana, announced this at a durbar organised by the Nkwantakese Affiliate of Habitat to inaugurate the houses at Nkwantakese on Wednesday.
It was also in honour of Mr Jonathan Reckford, Chief Executive Officer of Habitat Humanity International.
Mr Adu said the organization was operating in 135 communities in four regions, namely Ashanti, Central, Western and Eastern. He said many communities had benefited from their affordable housing project and therefore asked those communities who had not yet joined to do so to own houses.
Mr Ben Abankwa, Afigya-Sekyere District Chief Executive said the Agona Traditional Council impressed with the performance of organisation had released 30 hectares of land free of charge to them for the construction of houses for people in the area. He commended Habitat for Humanity Ghana for its immense contribution to people within the district and was optimistic more people would join the scheme to enable them put up their own houses. The DCE however, appealed to the organisation to consider enlarging sizes of their rooms to enable beneficiaries fell more comfortable with their families.
He commended Mr Albert Kan-Dapaah, Member of Parliament for the area and Minister of Communications for connecting the town to the national electricity grid.
Mr Reckford commended the Nkwantakese Affiliate for their efforts to own houses but regretted that the lack of funds had been the major problem militating against the organization in its efforts to provide affordable houses to the poor.
Nana Owusu Afriyie, Chief of Nkwantakese, expressed concern about the deplorable state of the Akom-Nkwantakese road and appealed to the district assembly to rehabilitate it.
