‘As a Catholic Priest, I receive just GH¢500 monthly' - Rev. Fr. Adjei opens up

Catholic Priest, Reverend Father Emmanuel Effah Adjei, has offered a candid glimpse into the financial realities of priesthood, revealing that he receives a monthly allowance of GH¢500.

He stressed that the priesthood is a vocation rooted in sacrifice, not financial gain.

Speaking in a video shared by NahbaffMedia and sighted by GhanaWeb, Father Effah Adjei explained that priests do not earn salaries but are given modest allowances to cover personal needs.

He noted that the Church’s resources are directed primarily toward supporting the congregation, while priests are expected to live simply.

“Our monthly allowance is something to just keep you going because you do not have a wife or children. We use the Church’s resources to help the people in the Church,” he said.

He recalled that as a newly ordained priest, he initially received a daily allowance of GH¢35, later increased to GH¢50.

He emphasised that anyone entering the priesthood with expectations of wealth has chosen the wrong path.

“If you are all about money, you cannot become a priest. If you take care of the work of God, God will also take care of you,” he stated.

Father Effah Adjei underscored that Roman Catholic priests do not receive salaries, describing their work as a sacrificial calling dedicated to serving God and humanity.

He disclosed that as a newly ordained priest, he initially received a daily allowance of GH¢35, which has since been increased to GH¢50.

“Roman fathers do not receive monthly pay. It is a sacrificial job. We just receive allowances,” he said.

Addressing public perceptions about wealthy pastors, he noted that expensive cars or gifts often come from congregants rather than personal income.
