  The popular idea that there is a part of man that has independent reality and can survive the body is called The Immortality of the Soul doctrine. This is the school of thought of dualism which views man as a "composite being, a union of things that are essentially different, such as body and soul. According to dualism, one of the parts is the real bearer of personal identity, and it does not need the other to exist" Rice.
  
  Note God's word which Adam and Eve knew when they were created:
  
  "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
  Genesis 2:7.
  
  Observe: 1. God formed man from of the dust of the ground.
  2.God breathed into his nostrils.
  3. Man became a living soul.
  
  It is important that we do not read into the above passage that man has a soul, because he doesn't; he is a soul.
  
  This biblical concept is of the school of wholism. "Man is a complex unity of many facets. They are interrelated, and none can exist in isolation" (Rice).
  
  The Hebrew word "Shamah" means breath or spirit, an animating power within a physical body which comes from God, but never capable of existing separately outside the body.
  It is worth noting that biblically humans are not the only souls around, animals are souls, too. (Genesis !:21; 1:24).
  
  The Temptation in Eden
  
  Satan knew that Eve would lose her home in the Garden of Eden, and would also die if she ate the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, according to God's promise (Genesis 2:17). Thus Satan's contradiction of God that she "will not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil" was calculated to cause Eve to fall, contaminate the earth with sin, loose her Edenic home, and leave the door of communication open with Satanic spirits.
  
  The Immortality of the soul doctrine is Satanic. It is one sure way to invite temptation from man's adversary, the devil.
