Dear Countrymen,
Ghanaian tradition forbids us saying negative things about the departed. Every human being has some people who love him or her or whom they have loved or done some good in his life. We should honor that.
However, we should never lie and deceive those behind about history, in order for those behind to know the right path for our society. We must learn the right way to dissent and disagree and even to confront authority when we feel things are not going right.
Ghanaian history and our faltered democracy in the post independence era cannot be told without PV's involvement in the illegal coup that overthrew a legitimate government of Dr. Limann on Dec.31, 1981. We can only compare Ghana to nations similar to ours in the post 1957 era that emerged from colonial rule.
Economists and Sociologists and all of you can decide if Ghana's economy has gotten better since 1981 through the military intervention in our nation's political life.
People in Ghana can attend funerals and wear their best dresses; but they can decide if living conditions are better.
People can decide if there is less corruption and accountability today than in 1981, for which reasons the coup was conducted.
It is left to us all to think if a military coup really is a contribution to the nation, and especially who the coup benefits - the coup makers and members of the PNDC or the ordinary people.
Pastors should do their work but I will advice all Ghanaians to stop exaggerations and portray history correctly so those behind do not repeat mistakes of the past. As a people we should also learn to cut back expenses on funeral ceremonies and rather invest our moneys together at the local levels to build health care systems, emergency communication and transportation systems. It is quite possible if such things were done, PV would have been saved and enjoyed a longer life with his family. Such systems can best be done locally, as done in nations like the US and most Western nations. The Members of our Parliament should think seriously how to amend the constitution and limit the powers of the President to appoint more than 4,000 city, town, district and regional executives as well as Cabinet Ministers and Deputies, and Agency Heads, and rather allow local people to think for themselves and provide services such as health and emergency care for their own welfare.
I had a chance to meet and sit next to PV Obeng at a JOY-FM debate on National Development Planning in 2010 and I think we agreed very well on the topical matter of our presentations; I wish his family well and may he rest in peace.
