3rd Amputee Africa Cup to raise enthusiasm in Ghana

It is official. Ghana will host the 3rd edition of the Cup of Africa Nations for Amputee Football (CANAF) 2011 from October 15 to 25 in Accra with Ghana’s Black Challenge promising not just to win the championship but also whip up the enthusiasm of their countrymen towards the game.

Employing the theme ‘Let’s be passionate about our passion,’ the tournament expected to involve 12 African nations was officially launched at the plush Alisa Hotel at the end of last month with Francis Adjetey Sowah, President of the Ghana Amputee Football Federation (GAFF) stressing that the nation has the opportunity to not only reinforce the status as the best Amputee football country in Africa but more importantly showcase its tourist and investment potential to the world.

“Amputee football is changing the fortunes of our unfortunate brothers, and perhaps sisters in the future, who would otherwise have become beggars.

“CANAF 2011 offers the corporate world and individuals an opportunity to show your love for Mother Ghana by supporting this worthy cause that aims at promoting Ghana and putting amputee football on the right pedestal to a veritable means of livelihood to the disabled,” said Mr. Adjetey Sowah who also doubles as President of the Amputee Football Federation of Africa (AFFA).

Hosts Ghana won the first edition staged in Sierra Leone four years ago but the Black Challenge were absent at the 2nd edition two years ago in Liberia due to financial constraints.

Alongside Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Angola and Niger have already confirmed participation with South Africa, DR Congo, Algeria, Kenya, Rwanda and Mali also expected in Accra in October.

“Ghana has always scored firsts and I believe this is another opportunity to lead the way in promoting the sport on the continent as a whole. Our name has become synonymous with quality in African football,” said Neil Armstrong Mortagbe, CEO of Krypton Ghana Limited who officially launched the 10-day tournament.
