Accra, the capital of the nation, was quiet despite Africa's World Cup debutants, Senegal's shock 1-0 win over former colonial masters and defending champions France, in the opener of the Japan/Korea World Cup soccer fiesta.

Business was brisk, and people were seen going about their work as usual except for scattered instances where especially youths, gathered in front of electronic shops to watch the match.

Trading and other business activities suspended prior to the game resumed immediately after the Africa's victory, courtesy Diop Pape Bouba's 30 minutes strike in a melee.

It is the second opening match victory for Africa in 12 years after Cameroon's 1-0 win over Argentina during the 1990 event from Omar Biyik's header.

A lot of soccer fans the GNA Sports interviewed expressed delight about El Hadji Diouf's display of skills and his contribution towards the lone goal.

They contended that the player has justified his position as Africa's

number one footballer inspite of an uproar, which followed his award.

Meanwhile, French coach Roger Lemerre blamed a shortage of quality from his side for the shock defeat.

Lemerre saluted Senegal's performance against his reigning champions who missed the invention of injured star player Zinedine Zidane.

"It's a big big performance for Senegal," said Lemerre. "They used good tactics and they played very well. But we cannot say, after this result, that the future of the French team in our group is finished."

Senegal play their second group A match against Demark on June 6, at Daegu.
