CAF Instructor and former Ghana Football Association capo Ben Koufie has told SportsInGhana.com he will not be surprised if an African team wins the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Mr. Koufie says the continent has national teams blessed with talented players and the six nations representing the continent are capable of bringing the continent its first victory in the history of the global soccer showpiece.
But first of all, Ben Koufie insists Africa must cross the last eight hurdle. “Africa should aim at going beyond the quarter final because we’ve been there before and it will be great to surpass it.
“When we get the semi finals, we can then mobilise resources to reach the final and possibly win it,” the former boss of Ghana football told SportsInGhana.com at the GFA offices on Tuesday.
True. No team from Africa has done better than Cameroon and Senegal making the quarter finals in 1990 and 2002 respectively.
But Mr. Koufie believes his country which only made the second round on their debut last time in Germany 2006 can exceed expectations this time and make the semis.
A former coach of the Black Stars himself, Ben Koufie has reposed massive confidence in Ghana’s under-fire trainer Milovan Rajevac and is backing the Serbian for success. “It should be our target to go beyond where we reached in 2006.
“I believe we can get to the semi finals because we have a good squad and a good coach. We must blend as a team is most important, collective in defence and collective in attack.
“I think the coach has done a very good job and he knows what he is about. He is a cool and calculated person and I don’t think he will allow anybody to dictate to him,” Mr. Koufie said.
