CAIRO, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Captain Stephen Appiah's driving force from midfield played a major role in Ghana qualifying for the first time to the World Cup finals.
The 25-year-old moved to Udinese in Italy at the age of 16 and played also for Parma. In July he signed for Turkey's Fenerbahce after two seasons at Juventus, which included a Serie A championship triumph.
Appiah played for Ghana at the African Nations Cup finals in 2000 when Ghana were co-hosts but only reached the quarterfinals. He was not in the squad two years later when they also reached the last eight in Mali.
