Kwesi Appiah says Ghana was simply unlucky not to take all three points against Sudan after a lacklustre display marred what had been billed as a grand homecoming from the 2010 World Cup quarter finalists.

The 2012 Nations Cup qualifier at the Baba Yara Stadium was the first game at home for the Stars since the World Cup and the stadium in Kumasi was packed for the meeting with many of the fans expecting a rout.

But the Black Stars looked off colour from the first minutes and struggled to break down a solid Sudan side who defenders in numbers and got a deserved point that left players, officials and fans of the Black Stars frustrated.

The game had also been billed as an opportunity for Appiah, an assistant to Milovan Rajevac before the Serbian left to prove he can take charge of the team on his own but they failed to take their chance leaving Appiah to look back on missed opportunities and a moment of sheer stupidity by his top striker Asamoah Gyan who got himself sent off.

“I knew the Sudan game was going to be tough especially after watching them. I knew they would come out fighting but it happens. The boys did very well. Even at 10 against 11 we were on top. We just were not lucky,” Appiah told KickOffGhana.com.

Ghana’s next game in the qualifiers will be in March against Congo but it is highly unlikely Appiah will be the man in charge then.
