Black Stars stay put

The long-running feud between the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the country's leading professionals has resurfaced just days before a cruch Nations Cup qualifier.

The Black Stars are due to face Rwanda on Sunday in one of this weekend's three winner-take-all ties.

Ghana will qualify for Tunisia 2004 if they avoid defeat but some of the country's key foreign-based players have decided to boycott the assignment in Kigali.

They include Michael Essien, the midfielder who left French club Paris Saint-Germain to sign for champions Lyon earlier this week.

Key personnel

The Dutch-based duo of Abubakari Yakubu and Matthew Amoah and Derek Boateng of Greek outfit POAK Salonica have also pulled out.

This has forced coach Bukhard Ziese to travel to Kigali without some of the key personnel he would have wanted in his squad.

According to a GFA official in Accra, the players have "simply refused to go" but media reports say the players' decision has been triggered by their dislike of Ziese's management style.

The German will also be without goalkeeper Edward Ansah. The 40-year-old's inclusion in the team's last three games drew heavy criticism and he has voluntarily stepped aside.

Ziese has played down Ghana's chances of qualifying for next year's finals as a result of the withdrawals.

He said: "I was confident but without the players I wanted, I'm not sure our chances are as good as they would have been."

But GFA chairman Ben Koufie has said the team would have no excuse if it failed to win in Rwanda.

"It's a disappointment that most of the foreign-based players didn't respond to the call-up, but we must make the most of what we have," he said.
