Club fined over Oduro racist abuse

Concacaf has fined Costa Rican side Alajuelense following racist abuse from their supporters at Montreal Impact and Ghana winger Dominic Oduro.

The 28-year-old reported that fans made monkey noises at him during the first leg of Concacaf Champions League final at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela on April 7.

The club will pay an undisclosed amount and also play their next home game in the CCL on a neutral venue. The body said fans also littered the field with projectiles and that the club did not provide required security for the meeting.

In his reaction, Oduro commended Concacaf’s decision and believes it is another step towards the eradication of racism from the sport.

“I think Concacaf did the right thing. I wasn’t making this up out of the blue. It was something that really happened,” Oduro told a press conference in Montreal on Tuesday.

“Such behaviour takes away the fun of the game. I think we are in this to enjoy the beautiful game, and for some of the fans to do that was uncalled for.

“We need to join hands together to help eradicate racism in the sport that we all love,” he said.

The former Toronto FC star provided assist for Ignacio Piatti’s goal in the first leg of the CCL final and is expected to feature in the return leg.
